Mali Gold: Splendors for Foreign Firms, Misery for Malian Miners

Mali is in a financial crisis, and is known as one of the poorest countries in the world. Yet it is the third largest gold exporter in Africa, and over the next five years, the abundance of the newly found gold in Southern Mali should double its annual gold output to one-hundred tons. Yet many of the citizens of Mali dislike this, for the mine work is dangerous, exhausting, and they hardly get anything out of it. To start what is called a "traditional mine", they first dig out holes as wide as their bodies. They then dig shafts as deep as sixty meters. Mining from there is in a cramped tunnel with not much oxygen, and no structures around the tunnel, making it unsafe. It is extremely exhausting, the grueling mining work and the eventual dehydration for eleven hours straight. Their pay is not that satisfying either. They do not get paid in cash, but instead, with some rocks from the mine. If they don't have gold in them, they're worthless. Government mines have machinery and is a lot less painful. Officials of Mali are planning to ban traditional mining, but if they do, that will also leave hundreds of people unemployed. It is unclear where these people would go, and brings up an unemployment problem, that could lead to riots.

Chinese Art Poem
by Nicholas Ruiz
It is early in the morningThe sun shines on water like light shining on gold
Peasants go to workTaking all of the rice like birds taking bred crumbs
Them alone feeds the whole area.

Should it be 'they alone'? I like it. Mr. Chester

Alexander the Great

Because of his conquering of many kingdoms, Alexander the Great was a brilliant explorer. He was born in Pella around the time of July 20, 356 B.C.E., and his parents were King Phillip of Macedonia and his fourth wife, Olympias, daughter of Neoptolemus, the king of Epirus. At the age of ten, he tamed a horse who refused to let anybody ride him; Alexander figured out that the horse was frightened by his own shadow. Leonidas, who was his mother’s father, tutored him. Then, when Alexander became 13, his father, seeked a new tutor. He chose the famous philosopher Aristotle, who tutored him until he was 16. But in 336 B.C.E, tragedy struck when Phillip was assassinated by one of his own bodyguards. At the age of 20, he then became the new king. He led multiple conquests, and conquered many places such as Mesopotamia, Syria, Tyre, Egypt, and Persia, and never lost a battle. His empire kept growing, until they reached the Ganges River. There the soldiers pleaded him to stop his empire here, so they didn’t have to go any further and would be able to turn back. Alexander eventually agreed and turned back to Babylon. There, at the age of 30, he died of a mysterious illness. It may be the cause of poison from the river Styx, which its water is undrinkable. Some also say that he might have been poisoned and murdered, but is unlikely. Also, diseases like malaria and typhoid fever are likely. I think Alexander the Great is very influential, because not only did he conquer most of Europe without losing a battle, he also influenced Greek architecture, art, and religion everywhere, from Egypt to Mesopotamia, which is hard to accomplich within 10 years.

Life is a Road:by Nicholas Ruiz

My life has been a road.
It's been smooth sometimes,
Going through a peaceful valley
Full with flowers and grass.
Serene.
But it's not always like that.
Sometimes it's bumpy and unpaved.
Sometimes it winds around a mountain
And sometimes I get carsick.
Sometimes it's boring
Just a long boring strip,
Making me wonder when something exciting will happen.
Sometimes there is a giant obstacle
And I have to make a detour,
And sometimes I get lost,
And have to ask a map for help.
It's stressful.
But at the end of each road, there is always a destination.
Maybe an arcade, or a friend's house, or a fair, or Disneyland
Someplace great.
And that's why I keep going on,
Because, I know that at the end
I will be rewarded.
